Atlas Renewable Energy Taps CJR for 200-MW Battery in Chile

Portugal-based CJR Renewables has been chosen by Atlas Renewable Energy to construct a 200-MW/800-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Chile’s Antofagasta region, next to an existing solar farm. CJR will handle the civil and electrical works, including the installation of 320 Sungrow battery units. The BESS will be located near the Sol del Desierto solar farm, which Atlas recently brought online in Tocopilla Province.

The BESS will operate independently, interacting only with the grid, and has a 15-year power purchase agreement with Chilean energy trader Emoac. It is expected to inject around 280 GWh per year into the grid to reduce curtailments. This project highlights the growing importance of energy storage in the renewable energy sector.
