Methane-Emission Sensor Network Initiative

The University of Texas at Austin, the Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), ExxonMobil, the Gas Technology Institute (GTI) and Pioneer Natural Resources Company are collaborating on a network of sensors for emissions monitoring across the oil and gas process industry.Project Astra seeks to develop a sensor network that would continuously measure emissions of the greenhouse gas methane to locate potential leaks.

US Administration Updates Offshore AQ Rules

The U.S. Administration has updated air-quality regulations for offshore drilling in sections of the Gulf of Mexico and off the coast of the North Slope Borough of Alaska.The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) released a final rule on May 14 that updates air pollution controls for most offshore oil and gas operations, without extensive changes proposed by the previous administration.The final rule makes a few changes in specifications, such as replacing the old standard for total suspended particulate matter (PM) with the PM2.5 and PM10 standards of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
