Outokumpu joins TOCANEM to support carbon neutrality

Outokumpu joins a three-year research program Towards Carbon Neutral Metals (TOCANEM) as a part of a consortium of multiple metal industry companies and universities in Finland. The research program is an important step in Outokumpu’s roadmap towards carbon neutrality. It enables Outokumpu to study and develop the necessary technologies needed to reach ambitious climate targets and to support Outokumpu’s position in sustainability.
The ambition of the TOCANEM project is to enable the shift to carbon neutral metals production in Finland, to establish global leadership in process innovations related to carbon neutral metals production and to provide new research-driven knowhow.
The project is a part of the implementation of national and EU level low-carbon roadmaps. Outokumpu has set ambitious goals for its own operations and aims to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. Outokumpu is already well on-track to meet its short-term target of 20% reduction by 2023.
