Under the newly elected Biden administration, the United States will have a much more progressive position on climate change than the previous administration. Biden has already laid out a USD $2 trillion clean energy and infrastructure plan, a commitment to rejoin the Paris agreement and a goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
According to an analysis by the Climate Action Tracker, US President-elect Joe Biden’s climate plan could put the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5˚C “within striking distance.”
The non-profit group which tracks government climate action found that if fulfilled, Biden’s plan would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 75 gigatons of carbon dioxide by 2050. To meet the 1.5°C goal, China will need to stick with its pledge to go carbon neutral by 2060, as well as European Union, Japan and South Korea achieving their climate commitments, CAT reports.
