Our Featured Story archive is a collection of the Featured Story’s which have been published in our magazine and taken pride of place as the ‘unique feature article’ on our Fugitive Emissions Journal home page. In addition to industry updates, market news and topical issues of the day the Feature Story provides an interesting mix of company profiles, in-depth technical articles, reports from major end users and features projects in a variety of industries.
Over the years, the industry and public has begun to understand how severe and toxic emissions from various industries are a contributing cause of environmental damages including pollution of air, water and land. The release of tons of harmful gases into the atmosphere are known to cause negative consequences and most countries have taken steps to monitor and reduce national emission levels. By Gobind Khiani, M. Eng, P. Eng, Fellow - Piping/Pipelines.
With over fourteen years of experience as a Mechanical Engineer for Promon, Rafael Souza has accumulated a wealth of industry knowledge surrounding refineries, thermoelectric, supply chain efficiency and testing procedures. Rafael Souza talks about Promon’s unique emission regulations, material selection methods, recent project developments and his insight on the future of the industry. By Stephanie Matas & João Carlos Vitorino, Eng, MBA, Consultant
The BWON rule was promulgated under 40 CFR Part 61, Subpart FF, of the Clean Air Act in 1993 to control benzene emissions from facility waste. The rule can be broken into several parts: Applicability, Waste & Waste Stream Determination, Compliance options, Points of Waste Generation, and Treatment & Equipment Standards. By Tim Goedeker, Senior Principal Environmental Consultant, Phillips 66
There are many benefits to using Belleville springs in or adjacent to valves for a variety of purposes. Particularly in ball valves, when Belleville springs are added to the gland and around the seat, they ensure that the bolt preload is retained to reduce fugitive emissions. By George Davet, BSME, Vice President and Chief Engineer, Solon Manufacturing Company.
A wide range of components are regulated under Leak Detection and Repair (LDAR) programs. Regulations dictate the timeframe, frequency and method in which the components must be inspected. However, a complete understanding of these requirements is often lacking. By Sam Davis & Bronson Pate, RFS Compliance Solutions.
Many plants are faced with increasing scrutiny on fugitive emissions, particularly from valves. Valves are typically responsible for over half of the fugitive emissions in a plant. This results in a high degree of examination for assessment and leakage reduction. A large refinery, or chemical plant, can have over 100,000 valves and finding leaks can be a difficult task.

There are several different standards for low emissions certification. This article will focus on the API 641 certification and the ISO 15848-1:2015 standard. API 641 is specifically relevant to quarter-turn valves – the most common type of valve used in industry.
The requirement to comply with low emission standards has become one of the most important issues regarding valves over the past several years. The API has developed API 624 (applicable to API 600, 602. 603 & 623) and API 641 (applicable to API 599, 608 & 609), requiring less than 100 ppm without a re-torque, along with publishing the 3rd Edition of API 622 for packing that requires less than 100 ppm without a re-torque. The fifth staging of Valve World Americas Expo & Conference, organized by KCI Publishing Corporation and Messe Düsseldorf North America, was held on June 19th and 20th at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas. #VWAM2019
Operators in refineries, chemical, petrochemical, LNG and oil & gas production must keep GHG & environmental regulations for emissions in mind. One area where this is extremely important is in the processing of oil and gas. This overview discusses the most recent regulation updates issued by the Canadian Federal Government. By Gobind Khiani, M.Eng., P.Eng.
